Climate Protection Act 2021: The intergenerational contract for Germany

Germany's path to climate neutrality is mapped out in the Climate Protection Act. Following the ruling of the Federal Constitutional Court on April 29, 2021 and with a view to the European climate target for 2030, the Federal Government presented the amended Climate Protection Act on May 12, 2021. The Bundestag passed the climate protection amendment on June 24, 2021. It also passed the Bundesrat on June 25, 2021.

The decision of the Federal Constitutional Court obliges the state to actively take precautions to ensure that there are no disproportionate restrictions on the fundamental freedoms of today's young people in the future.

Targets in brief:

  1. CO2-reduction targets by 2030 = 65% compared to 1990
  2. CO2-reduction target by 2040 = -88% compared to 1990
  3. Climate neutrality from 2045
  4. Negative emissions after 2050
